HISTORY OF WILLOWRIDGE
Willowridge High School, though relatively young, stands out with its modern ideas
and a vibrant community of talented young individuals. This institution has fostered
an environment of enthusiasm, friendship, and a pioneering spirit, a testament to its
unique heritage and dedication to nurturing excellence.
The school's ethos is deeply rooted in the legacy of four notable South Africans, each
closely linked to Pretoria East and the early development of the Transvaal. These
historical figures have lent their names to our four school houses, with each house
badge featuring elements from their original family crests.
The first of these figures, chronologically, is Harry Struben. Known as a pioneer in the gold fields, Struben initiated a transport business in 1860, connecting the old Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR) capital with Natal. The success of this venture enabled him to purchase a farm named The Willows, which at that time was situated far to the east of Pretoria.
The story of Willowridge High School began in earnest at the start of 1985, when a Vigilance Committee was elected during a meeting of prospective parents. Known as the "watchdogs," this committee was instrumental in overseeing the development of the new school. They ensured that the construction process respected the land's heritage, preserving the school cottage and the trees that contribute to our school's tranquil, country atmosphere.
Beyond their supervisory role, the Committee was dedicated to shaping the ethos and fundamental philosophy of Willowridge High School. This vision materialised when the school officially opened its doors on Wednesday, 7 January 1987, welcoming the first 187 pupils in Forms One and Two. During the first term, the name Willowridge High School was formally adopted, and a badge was designed to symbolise its identity.
The heritage of Willowridge High School is more than just a collection of historical facts; it is a living tradition that continues to inspire and guide our community. The pioneering spirit of Harry Struben and the dedication of the early Vigilance Committee remain central to our identity, as we strive to cultivate an environment where young minds can excel and flourish.
Deeply rooted in a firm foundation
Coat of Arms
Our Coat of Arms was approved by the Bureau of Heraldry in 1988 and depicts the name of the school and its inherent philosophy. The shape is that of a spade symbolising the pioneering spirit with which the school was started. The two willow trees standing on the ridge, nurturing and protecting the Tudor Rose as it blossoms represent the name of the school.
The willow trees represent growth from the firm foundations of the ridge and symbolise the parent and teacher, while the Tudor rose identifies our English heritage and symbolises the child at its blossoming stage of development.
The centre of the rose depicts the child’s potential being developed, while the five
barbed seeds represent the five facets of the child’s development, namely the spiritual, the academic, the cultural, the physical and social development.
The triad formed by the two willow trees and the Tudor Rose further depicts the protective, nurturing role of the home and school in the education of the child.
OUR SCHOOL SONG
With a spirit of devotion in our heart and mind and soul
We will honour our name and emblem as we strive to meet our goal.
Willowridge, well serve our Country and to men both great and small
We’ll extend our hand of friendship, practice tolerance to all.
Truth and honesty and friendship, increase as we all grow
And all our talents we will further, as through life we go.
Willowridge, we’ll try our utmost academically and at sport,
In the true pursuit of knowledge may enlightenment be sought.
we’ll be brave and we’ll stand taller, and strive with one accord
To be humble and obedient, and faithful to the Lord.
Truth and honesty and friendship, increase as we all grow
and all our talents we will further, as through life we go.
The school slogan "Strive with Integrity" and the school song cemented into words the ethos of our new school and the symbolic nature of our coat of arms. The words of our school song came from the pupils, while Mrs Grobler, the grandmother of the Smith family, composed the final melody.
Honoring Our Legacy
Past Principals Of Willowridge
Eddie Penzhorn 1987 - 1990

Our first Headmaster, Eddie Penzhorn, who came to Willowridge High from The Glen High, had to face more than what is typically expected of a new headmaster. Upon his arrival, he was met with the formidable task of not just leading a school but essentially creating one from scratch.
Eddie Penzhorn's journey began with transforming a wilderness of needs into a functioning educational institution. He had to secure essential resources, such as textbooks, equipment, desks, chairs, and sports fields. This monumental task also involved recruiting dedicated staff members and enrolling students, laying the foundation for the school community.
Through his unwavering dedication and visionary leadership, Penzhorn successfully molded these disparate elements into the cohesive, modern school we are proud of today. His pioneering efforts and determination set the standards and traditions that continue to guide Willowridge High, ensuring that it remains a beacon of educational excellence and community spirit.
We owe much of our success and identity to the groundwork laid by Eddie Penzhorn, whose legacy continues to inspire and shape the future of our institution.
Jack Birkenbach 1991 - 2004

In 1991, our second Headmaster, Jack Birkenbach, was appointed. After a year in office, he confidently reflected upon the myriad of individual achievements our pupils at Willowridge High had attained in such a short time. Modestly, we acknowledge that national and provincial honours, while significant, are secondary to our exemplary academic results.
Under Mr. Birkenbach's leadership, we saw a remarkable number of pupils passing with four or more distinctions in Matric. However, the achievement he was proudest of was our 100% matric pass rate. This milestone was a testament to the hard work and dedication of both the students and the staff, reflecting the high standards of academic excellence and the supportive learning environment fostered at Willowridge High.
Furthermore, Mr. Birkenbach's tenure was marked by the strengthening of our school's community spirit and the enhancement of extracurricular activities, ensuring a well-rounded education for all pupils. His commitment to maintaining and elevating the school's standards has left a lasting impact on our legacy of success.
Andre du Plessis 2005 - 2016

In 2005, our third Headmaster, Mr Andre du Plessis, was appointed. We look to his new leadership, drive, and vision to guide us into a promising future. With his appointment, we are confident that his dynamic approach will inspire continued growth and achievement at Willowridge High.
Under Mr du Plessis's stewardship, we aim to harness the talent and potential within our school community to achieve the ambitious goals outlined in our Vision Statement. His focus on innovation and excellence is expected to propel us forward, building on the strong foundations laid by his predecessors.
We believe that with the dedication and hard work of all members of staff, we can honour our school's pioneering legacy while embracing new discoveries and developments. Mr du Plessis's commitment to both academic excellence and the holistic development of our pupils ensures that Willowridge High will continue to thrive and excel, nurturing future leaders and innovators.
Rowan Phillips 2017 - 2021

In 2017, we welcomed Mr Phillips with great enthusiasm as our fourth Headmaster.
Mr Phillips joined the Willowridge family in 1987 as an English teacher. He was subsequently promoted to Head of the English Department and then to Deputy Principal. As one of our proud founding teachers, he played a crucial role in developing the school into the prestigious institution it is today.
His long-standing commitment to Willowridge High has been marked by a deep passion for education, insightful leadership, and a genuine concern for teachers, parents, and pupils alike. Mr Phillips's extensive experience and intimate understanding of our school culture have positioned him uniquely to lead us into a new era of excellence.
Under his guidance, we anticipate continued success and growth, building on the strong foundation he helped to establish. His contributions to the school's history and his dedication to nurturing a supportive and high-achieving environment will undoubtedly be remembered as a significant part of Willowridge High's legacy.

As the first female and youngest principal, her tenure was marked by a strong commitment to education and unwavering support for both staff and students. Gisella's innovative and visionary approach significantly benefited countless students, leaving a lasting impact on the institution.
